2010 Gunn Report top Agencies
The 2010 Gunn report is an attempt to rank the top advertising agencies based on their creative merits. This is not easy to do since we are talking about a very subjective area. The approach that they have come up with is to use the number of awards that each advertiser wins as a means of determining how successful the campaign was. While there are serious flaws with this approach it is probably the best that can be done. The 2010 Gunn report produced rather predictable results; BBDO was ranked as the top advertising agency network in the world. Given that they have now been ranked in the top spot in eight out of twelve years the report has been produced including the last five in a row it is not a surprising result. What is surprising is that their dominance continues to grow. For the second year in a row the set a new record for the margin of victory. This dominance is starting to make the Gunn report a little bit irrelevant since everybody does know who will win before the report ever comes out.
Not only did BBDO take the top spot as the best agency network one of their agencies AlmapBBDO took the top spot for agencies. As if this dominance wasn't enough two of their other agencies finished in top five. Clearly BBDO are by far the top advertising agency in the world right now which probably comes as no surprise given that they are also the biggest. In fact their size is a big part of what keeps them ranking first. The way that the Gunn report compiles its rankings works to the heavy benefit of the larger agencies.
The issue with the Gunn report and the way that it is compiled is that they simply add up how many awards each agency has one for its advertising campaigns over the previous year. It goes without saying that the more campaigns that an agency runs the more awards they are likely to win. The result is that as the largest agency in world BBDO tends to rank at the top every year. This does raise some questions about the value of the Gunn report as a means of determining how good an agency is.
Despite the flaws in the methodology of the Gunn report it is still the best way of ranking ad agencies on their creative work. The fact that BBDO is eligible for the most awards does not change the fact that they did win the awards. It is also important to keep in mind that there is a reason that BBDO is the largest agency in the world. They give their customers what they want and that after all is the goal. The dominance of BBDO is well deserved as they have been one of the most successful agencies of the last couple of decades.
